About Thomson Reuters Foundation

Established in 1982, Thomson Reuters Foundation is a registered charity in Britain and the United States. The charitable arm of Thomson Reuters, it leverages the skills and expertise across the corporation to increase trust and access to the rule of law, to save lives through the provision of trusted information and to improve standards of journalism.

Following the acquisition of Reuters by the Canadian group Thomson Corp in 2008, the Foundation's resources and programmes were expanded and a new leadership team was appointed. Richard Harrington, former president and CEO of Thomson, is chairman of the Foundation and Monique Villa, former managing director of Reuters Media, is chief executive.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation website, trust.org, is a portal which integrates the Foundation's three key areas of focus and brings together the Foundation's community of partners.

Saving lives through the provision of trusted information

AlertNet
AlertNet is a humanitarian news network based around a popular website. It aims to keep relief professionals and the wider public up-to-date on humanitarian crises around the globe and attracts upwards of ten million users a year, has a network of 400 contributing humanitarian organizations and its weekly email digest is received by more than 26,000 readers.

Emergency Information Service (EIS)
EIS is a free information service which aims to help survivors of natural disasters. It addresses the alarming gap in the chain of information when a catastrophe strikes by deploying highly mobile reporting teams to disaster zones to disseminate fast, reliable information to affected populations.

AidFund
AidFund created in 2000, is a fund designed to provide prompt seed funding to aid organisations responding to natural disasters during the first crucial days after an emergency.

Increasing trust and access to the rule of law

TrustLaw
TrustLaw will be a global hub designed to match those in need of legal expertise with those willing to offer skills and insight free of charge. It also strives to be a forum for best practice and experience in such legal fields as transparency and the rule of law.

Improving standards of journalism

Trust Media
The Thomson Reuters Foundation is a leader in international journalism training and a key provider of media training. It has trained over 6,000 journalists so far, sharing the skills and reporting principles that made Reuters a highly respected and trusted international news agency. More than 2,000 staff from UN agencies and aid organisations have also attended its media training workshops around the globe.

Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism
The Institute provides an independent forum for exchanges between practitioners and analysts of journalism and supports high quality research, analysis and comment into the workings of the international media.

Thomson Reuters Foundation is registered as a charity in the UK (Registration number 1082139). Thomson Reuters Foundation Inc was registered as a New York Not for Profit Corporation in September 2001 with 501c3 status.
